Aquaculture is developing into an important part of the Canadian economy, providing valuable employment opportunities in coastal and rural communities and contributing to the world’s food supply. According to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), aquaculture accounts for 14% of the Canadian fisheries product, 33% of its value, and employs over 16,000 Canadians. In Canada, there are over 6,000 licensed aquaculture operations. In BC, the most commonly grown species is salmon.
The fishing and aquaculture sector faces many unique considerations. These include the impact of the environment on inventory, environmental concerns and impact research, licensing, cost of entry and even basic accounting issues such as the costing of inventory, mortality rates and growth.
DMCL services in this sector include effective assurance services, bookkeeping and accounting, payroll and SR and ED filing, along with regular tax and planning.
