JAMES F. CARR-HILTON, FCA (Jim)

Partner


Jim received his CA designation in 1982 and is one of the founding partners of Dale Matheson Carr-Hilton LaBonte LLP (DMCL) in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada. Since 1996 Jim has been the Managing Director of DMCL, one of the largest independent accounting firms in the Metro Vancouver Region.

As well as overseeing the firm’s strategic development and quality assurances and standards groups, Jim manages a full client portfolio. Jim has extensive experience in both the public regulatory environments as well as private enterprise.

His industry specialty includes transportation, distribution logistics and real estate development entities. While working for private enterprises, he has provided advisory services in many business areas, such as, finance, succession, and various business transactions.

Jim has served on Council with the British Columbia Institute of Chartered Accountants and is Chair of the mid-sized Chartered Accountants’ firm forum. As a result, he has spearheaded many initiatives in the practice of public accounting. This includes leading and primary author of the national initiative know as the “Mid-firm Protocol Quality Assurance Project”. This protocol became the base document for the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants Quality Assurance Manual. He also initiated and was the driving force behind the mid-sized firm forum response to the original independence standards that came into effect on January 1, 2004. Jim volunteers for many charity events and serves as a member of the Board of Governors of the Justice Institute and has varied private business interests outside of public practice.

 

REGINALD J. LABONTE, CA (Reg)

Regulatory Group Practice Head


Reg is the lead partner in our Regulatory Practice Group which provides Assurance and other advisory services to both Canadian and US public companies.

Reg started his career in 1977 with Deloitte Touche in Vancouver, BC. In 1981, he left Deloitte Touche to become a Partner in a small CA firm. In 1983, Reg formed his own firm, LaBonte & Co. which established itself as a boutique Vancouver CA firm focused primarily on providing securities and regulatory services including auditing, accounting, and related mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance advisory services to public companies as well as management, accounting and tax advice to private owner/manager business.

 

RAKESH I. PATEL, CA

Regulatory Group Practice


Rakesh graduated from Simon Fraser University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and articled with a regional CA firm to obtain his CA designation in 1993. Rakesh joined DMCL in 2005 as a Principle and was admitted into Partnership in 2006.

Rakesh provides audit services to Canadian and US public companies. Rakesh also works with private companies entering the public markets and assists them with their registration process. Rakesh has extensive knowledge of the securities and regulatory environment. His clients are mainly in the mining, oil and gas, manufacturing, biotech and high tech sectors.  

He is a member of the Public Company Technical Forum sponsored by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC and the BC Securities Commission. Rakesh is also responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining the firm’s standards, training and quality control programs.

 

BARRY S. HARTLEY, CA

Regulatory Group Practice


Barry graduated from the Rand Afrikaans University, Johannesburg South Africa, in 1989 and obtained his CA designation in 1993 with an international CA firm. Barry spent several years in progressively more senior audit and advisory roles with large international firms until joining DMCL in 2005.

Barry focuses primarily on providing securities and regulatory assurance services to Canadian and US public company clients. Barry is leading the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) for the firm in accordance with the new requirements for publicly accountable enterprises with fiscal years beginning on or after January 1, 2011.

Barry has extensive experience in auditing national and international companies in the mining and extraction sectors. Barry is on the British Columbia Institute of Chartered Accountants’ (ICABC) Practice Review & Licensing Committee and is also a member of the ICABC’s Mining Forum.

 

David Goertz, CA, CPA

Partner


David received his B.Comm. from the University of Victoria in 2001 and then articled at an international firm, receiving his CA designation in 2004. He joined DMCL in 2005 and became a Partner in the Public Assurance Group in 2012.

David offers his clients extensive professional accounting and auditing experience in the public company sector. He specializes in both the extractive and technology industries, but also has clients in a variety of other sectors. In particular, David has a keen understanding of public company operations, restructurings, acquisitions and IPOs.

David volunteers with Big Brothers and other charities and is also a member of the Vancouver Board of Trade. Away from the office, he enjoys golfing, boating and spending time at Hollyburn.

 

ALVIN F. DALE, CA (Al)

Private Enterprise


Al received his CGA designation in 1980 and his CA in 1988 while articling with national and regional CA firms. Al provides services to a diverse range of clients including public and privately held corporations. Al has extensive experience in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, tax and estate planning. Al is responsible for the development and implementation of our firm's marketing program.

 

ROBERT J. MATHESON, CA (Bob)

Private Enterprise


Bob received his CA designation in 1983 while articling with an international accounting firm, and founded a DMCL predecessor firm in 1984. His main focus is providing accounting, tax and business advice to private enterprises. Bob has developed a particular expertise in the food and beverage industry.

 

 

FRED YADA, FCA

Private Enterprise


Fred was the founder and managing partner of Yada, Tompkins, Humphries, Palmer & Co. which merged with Ernst & Young in 1989. He was a partner with Ernst & Young for eleven (11) years and left the firm in 2001 to set up F.M. Yada Group Inc. His firm merged with Dale, Matheson, Carr-Hilton, LaBonte on July 1, 2008.

Fred’s professional career has been spent providing accounting, taxation and business management services to entrepreneurial clients. His expertise and specialty is in the music industry, and his clients include, Bryan Adams, Sarah McLachlan, Hedley, Hot Hot Heat, Jim Vallance, Raffi and many others.

Fred has served on Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and is a Director of the National Nikkei Museum & Heritage Centre and the Sarah McLachlan Foundation.

 

ROBERT J. BURKART, CA

Office Managing Partner


Rob obtained his CA designation in 1986 and then went on to complete the in-depth tax program. Rob joined DMCL in 1989, and is instrumental in guiding the firm’s strategic development. He has extensive experience in both owner-managed businesses and non-profit organizations.

As a tax specialist, Rob advises on tax compliance requirements and strategic tax planning. He was instrumental in growing the firm’s tax program, which now encompasses both a strong Canadian and US tax practice.

Outside of his professional life, Rob is President and Treasurer of Collingwood Neighbourhood Society and Treasurer of the Italian Cultural Centre Society. He also enjoys skiing, golf and travel.

 

KENNETH P. CHONG, CA (Ken)

Taxation Services


Ken graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1988 and obtained his CA designation in 1991 with KPMG in Vancouver. Ken also spent a number of years in industry, working as a senior tax advisor to Canada’s largest diversified mining company. Ken joined DMCL in 2005 and was admitted as a partner in January of 2007.

Ken has over 19 years of experience in Canadian and international tax. His areas of specialty include international tax planning, mining taxation, scientific research tax credit claims and tax planning for owner-managed businesses and individuals (including corporate reorganizations, estate planning and compensation planning).

Ken’s clients include owner-managed companies in a variety of industries (including high tech, manufacturing and real estate), entrepreneurs and public companies in the resource sector.

BRIAN A. SHAW, CA

Private Enterprise


Brian is a resident of Coquitlam and immigrated to Canada from Australia in 1987, after obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in Business. He began his articling with our Port Coquitlam predecessor firm, Jacobson Soda in 1991, received his designation as a Chartered Accountant in 1994, and became a partner with the predecessor firm in 1998.

Brian is experienced in numerous areas of public practice including:

  • accounting and auditing for small/medium sized corporations
  • accounting and auditing for "Not for Profit" entities
  • personal, corporate and estate taxation
  • non-resident compliance requirements
  • scientific research and experimental development claims

Fraser graduated from Simon Fraser University in 1989 and obtained his CA designation in 1993 with a regional CA firm. Fraser's client base consists of a variety of entities including small to medium sized owner-managed businesses, professionals, and charitable and not-for-profit organizations. Fraser has enjoyed assisting many clients on business acquisitions and dispositions while providing personal and corporate tax advice.

 

GARSON LEE, CA

Private Enterprise and Advisory Services


Garson graduated from UBC with a B Com degree and articled with PWC in both their Edmonton and Vancouver offices. He was designated in BC in 1978, and shortly after joined MacMillan Bloedel Limited (MacBlo) as Manager of Internal Audit in one of the largest forest products companies in the world at that time. Garson returned to public practice in 1979 joining a small independent firm as a Partner in Vancouver which subsequently merged with Cinnamon Jang Willoughby in 1991.

On January 1, 2009 Garson joined DMCL Chartered Accountants bringing a wealth of knowledge not only in the forest products industry but from owner managed business to the financial sector. He has considerable experience in providing tax services to non residents, new immigrants and emigrants and continues to remain very active in this area.

Garson is very active in the community. Over the past 3 years, he has chaired the Burnaby Hospital Golf Tournament known as the SLICE raising much needed funds.

Garson is a native of Metro Vancouver, married and has 4 children and 3 grandchildren. He is an avid golfer and has strong links to the Vancouver Chinese Community.

PETER J. DONALDSON, CA (Pete)

Pete graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1980 and obtained his CA designation in 1983 with KPMG. Pete joined DMCL in 1985 and has lead the technology group for the firm. During that time, Pete has lead the firm into a paperless environment, creating an efficient process for all assurance and accounting engagements.

Pete also spent time in industry gaining him a unique perspective for his owner managed clientele seeking best business practices. Pete is also a member of the DMCL’s Management Advisory Board. Pete participates and supports a number of community organizations including the Union Mission Gospel Society which provides community support to the homeless.

Pete focuses primarily on providing accounting, tax and business planning advice to private corporate clients. Pete has extensive experience in estate planning and success planning for both individual and corporation entities. In addition to servicing our corporate client base, Pete also provides audit and tax advisory services to many not-for-profit organizations.

 

MICHAEL K. BRAUN, CA (Mike)

Michael graduated from U.B.C. in 1986 and received his CA designation in 1989 while articling with the Vancouver office of a national CA firm. He has been a partner since 1993 and focuses on providing taxation and business advisory services to entrepreneurial small and medium sized businesses. Michael’s success has been derived from the personal care and attention he provides each client, tailoring customized financial and taxation plans that are sensitive to each client’s individual needs. He also has extensive experience advising clients in matters relating to income tax planning, estate tax planning, business financing, operational analysis and the purchase and sale of business interests. Michael has been active as a public speaker on various tax, financial and business topics.

Michael has been active in community organizations serving as a board member, executive member and volunteer. These include health care foundations, community social service agencies, amateur athletic associations, public schools and chambers of commerce. In addition, Michael has spent numerous hours serving as a coach to various amateur athletic teams.
